Marjun
Software Engineer (Ruby On Rails)
Exist Code Camper 2006
A native of Leyte, Marjun is hooked on photography and like most techies these days -- is very much into gaming. "I like Starcraft, Warcraft, Twisted Metal, and Contra."
"I like it that in Exist, I'm not boxed into concentrating in just one programming language. I continue to learn new and interesting things and that keeps me motivated. Besides, it's not all work. We are afforded time to also pursue other things -- to play and relax!"
"My dream is to be part of an open project that would revolutionize the Internet and how it affects us!"
Athena
Software Engineer
Exist Code Camper 2007
"Even at home, I still code but I also do kickboxing and knitting, too."
Athena was part of the group that topped their ECC batch but she didn't exactly plunge to work immediately after camp, "I was confident to push through with the trip (to China) and take up language studies because I had a standing job offer from Exist which I accepted upon coming back." So far, all signs indicate that indeed, she made the right decision.
"ECC is different from school. It's not real work but closer to real world experience than school plus it's fun!"
Camille
Software Engineer
Exist Code Camper 2007
Camille wanted to be part of ECC the minute she heard about it. "There's no way that I'd miss the opportunity to be more technically competent all within 6 weeks!" True enough, not only was she able to pass but she did so with flying colors that together with her teammates earned themselves a trip to HK Disneyland for placing first.
She's now part of the team working on a major telecoms portal after having been initially deployed in the R&D of open source ERP and BI apps. When not working, she spends time at home, watching movies with her parents and solving jigsaw puzzles.
"Three reasons why I like Exist -- the cool workplace, the talented people I work with and a management style that allows me to be the best that I can be!"
GretchenSoftware Engineer (Ruby on Rails)
Exist Code Camper 2007
Although she still considers herself a newbie, Gretchen is by no means a greenhorn when it comes to programming. Fact is, she has shifted from coding mostly Java to Ruby on Rails at present. "Most of the stuff I do now involve Ruby on Rails projects -- which really interests me." When not coding, she stays connected via different social networks such Facebook and Twitter. Offline, she'd rather be outside and immersing herself in nature-tripping.
"Aside from having awesome colleagues, Exist has such a cool environment -- it's a haven for bleeding-edge and open source technologies in an atmosphere where there's plenty of flexibility."

During Exist’s first few years of operation, we noticed the apparent discrepancy between what were being taught in universities (and colleges) and the skills required by the IT industry. Though the academe establishes a good technical foundation to students, the IT industry, like the software development group, has specific requirements which are just partially met by new university graduates. With that, ECC was conceptualized and later launched in 2006. As of 2010, Exist had conducted seven batches of ECC, counting both Manila and Cebu.
Exist is a world-class software engineering firm that provides Java, Ruby on Rails, Open Source, and technology expertise to Fortune 500 companies. What is Exist Code Camp?
Exist Code Camp (ECC) is a six-week intensive training program focused on deepening the skills of aspiring software engineers.
Who can join?
The program is open to all graduates of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology or other related course. Applicants must have completed their bachelor degree before the 1st day of the code camp. Please refer to the schedule for more information.
What happens during the code camp?
Code campers learn on the training sessions, build up technical skills and practical knowledge, get exposed to the actual world of software development, and earn all at the same time.
The curriculum is comprised of lectures, hands-on exercises, research works, and a project, broken down into 3 parts:
1) Fundamentals of Web Application Development
2) Open Source Frameworks
3) Project (1 week)
Code campers will be individually evaluated after each part. Only the top performing code campers will progress to the next part. Final software development project will be a team effort. Completion ceremony follows after all the presentations.
Why should I join ECC?
First of all, the training is FREE! In fact, training equipment and resources will also be provided by Exist. Furthermore, code campers shall receive an allowance while in the training -- you earn while you learn!
For new software engineers, joining ECC accelerates your readiness to create real software for your clients -- may it be your employer, customer and even for yourself. ECC equips you with the technical skills and soft skills that you will actually use in completing a software development project, giving you an edge over fellow university/college graduates.
At the same time, ECC gives code campers a taste of the actual world of software engineers. You get exposed to different stakeholders in a software development project -- client, project manager, software architect, team lead, QA engineers and teammates (other software engineers).
ECC gives you additional chance to identify your strengths and decide which aspect of software development best suits you. Likewise, the program shall help you decide if software development is really for you.
Throughout the program, you will get a chance to meet, be trained and be mentored by IT rockstars of Exist. Be welcomed by a serial entrepreneur who spearheaded several successful open source companies, or learn from a published author on software development automation or get mentored by seasoned speakers of international open source conferences.
When you work with the best, you move towards becoming one of the best.
As a code camper, you also gain a chance to work with Exist -- a homegrown IT company with international recognition and awards.
As a bonus, you meet new friends and develop camaraderie. In the program, we reiterate the importance of teamwork and being able to work effortlessly with other code campers. We also integrate other activities to help mold well-rounded individuals.
